Max has a good grasp on his basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS). He is able to carry on a conversation without much difficulty. He responds to questions with both one-word and multi-word answers. He may make errors in syntax, but it does not affect the conversant’s ability to understand him.
Max’s cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) is not at an ideal level yet. He requires extra time in class to complete his work because he does not have an adequate grasp on the more complex academic vocabulary and lacks the background knowledge necessary to acquire full comprehension.
